The SNU Opera Center was founded on November 15, 2023, as the Opera Research Institute.
It was initially established in December 1993 and operated until July 2022, serving as the first opera research institute in Korea.
The main purpose of the center is to nurture opera talents with world-class capabilities and contribute to the development of opera. This goal can be achieved by providing systematic and professional training in opera, a multidisciplinary art form that combines music, art, theater, and dance.
Students will gain practical stage experience through various performances at our university, as well as planned performances in collaboration with domestic and international institutions, universities, and cultural arts organizations. We also analyze the status and standing of opera worldwide and conduct master classes by inviting renowned artists from abroad.
The Regular Opera Concert held at the College of Music, SNU has a tradition of over 60 years, with its first performance in 1959 and its 33rd performance scheduled for 2023. The college holds regular opera performances every two years, featuring over 250 members of the College of Music. These performances not only enhance the reputation of Seoul National University but also contribute to the improvement of Korean music.
Additionally, the College of Music provides performances to donors, members of the Seoul National University Foundation, and the local community, thereby promoting cultural enrichment and balance within the community.
Through collaborations with overseas institutions, domestic and international universities, and major theaters and cultural organizations, we are fostering the next generation of opera talents to debut not only on the national stage but also on the global platform.
