Department of Korean Music
The Department of Korean Music at the College of Music, SNU, was established in 1959 with the goal of improving the academic and artistic standards of Korean music and nurturing talented individuals who will contribute to the Korean music industry.
In 1963, a graduate program in Korean music focusing on music theory was introduced. Subsequently, in 1983, courses for students majoring in Korean instrumental music, Korean vocal music, and Korean composition were added to offer a wider range of graduate education. Then, a Ph.D. program in theoretical studies was introduced in 1989, and a Ph.D. program in practical studies was also added in 2004 to provide more specialized education.
The Department of Korean Music offers undergraduate major programs in Gayageum, Geomugo, Haegeum, Daegeum, Piri, Agung, Percussion, Korean Music Composition, Korean Music Theory, Korean Vocal Music, and Korean Music Conducting. Throughout the undergraduate program, there are regular concerts and events for each instrument and major such as the annual concert, spring concert, vocal recital, creative music recital, freshman concert, graduation concert, theory seminar, and music camp.
The students in the Department of Korean Music have been acknowledged for their performances in top competitions across the country. With the support of school and faculties, they have also been able to gain diverse experiences through performances and workshops abroad. These opportunities help them develop their skills and capabilities as individuals who will lead the field of Korean music.
The Department of Korean Music at the College of Music, SNU, has been dedicated to producing top performers, composers, musicologists, and educators since its establishment. The department's educational policy aims to train talented individuals who will build upon the foundation of traditional Korean music and lead the new direction of Korean music. Graduates of the Department of Korean Music not only inherit traditional music but also lead the new trends in Korean music and promote the globalization of Korean music in various fields.
