Department of Musicology
The Department of Musicology, formerly known as the Composition and Theory Major, educates musicologists, music theorists, and critics through an integrated program that combines musical knowledge and practice.
The department organizes academic events once or twice every semester and collaborates with various societies such as the Korean Society for Western Music, the Korean Society for Western Music Theory, the Music History Association, and the Music Aesthetics Research Association. Additionally, the department actively contributes to academic initiatives through specialized publications, such as the KCI-registered journal Music Theory Research.
A theory major was established in the composition department in 1981, followed by a master's program in 1984, and a Ph.D. program in 1989 (in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences). In 2012, Ph.D. program in Western musicology was also founded within the College of Music.
In 2023, the Department of Music became an independent department, enabling more in-depth research.
Musicology is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses various studies related to music. Students delve into areas such as music aesthetics, music sociology, music theory and analysis, and acoustics. They also develop skills in creative and logical writing, effective communication, and the entire thesis completion process, including research methodology and topic selection. Furthermore, in line with the contemporary music culture of the 21st century, students explore a broad range of academic areas related to music, encompassing not only intra-musical research but also aesthetic judgment, historical significance, societal relevance, and various fields associated with new media, science, and technology. The comprehensive training in the Department of Music lays a crucial foundation for successful careers in academic music research and practical applications. Graduates pursue diverse career paths, including musicology, music criticism, cultural industries, performance organization, music education, and media content creation.
