The Asian Music Research Institute, affiliated with the College of Music of Seoul National University, was established in 1976 with the aim of studying Asian music, focusing in particular on Korean music research. The Asian Music Research Institute holds domestic and international academic conferences every year, addressing a wide range if key issues in the academic community. Research papers presented at the conference are included in the journal Tongyang Umak, which is published twice a year to expand the research results of Korean music academia.
The domestic conference hosted by the Asian Music Research Institute aims to expand the scope of Korean music research and diversify research methodologies by accepting various perspectives in adjacent academic fields such as Korean literature, history, folklore, and anthropology. In addition, the Asian Music Research Institute invites researchers from not only Korea but also around the world to international academic conferences hosted by the institute to discuss music and music culture from various cultures.
The Asian Music Research Institute has also been carrying out projects such as foundation research projects, and will continue ta carry out further research in future. Our Institute will continue to make efforts to study Korean music and serve as a major research institute.
