The Department of Vocal Music was founded in 1946, the same time Seoul National University was established. Even though this was a time of political and economic turmoil, studies continued regarding a standard for art and the foundation of art was established. Although many years of have passed, intensive study still continues as the Seoul National University College of Music Department of Vocal Music has been producing many talented performers as well as educators who contribute greatly to the field of vocal music. This has been possible due to the Department¡¯s first-rate faculty and the comprehensive curriculum offered to its talented students.
A representative event of the Department of Vocal Music is its biennial opera performance. The production boasts a grand scale and all departments of the College of Music participate in the operas, making this an event of great significance. The operas thus presented by Seoul National University College of Music have been a success consistently since the very first production. Such success has recieved considerable national attention from the cultural field. Furthermore, as part of the preparation process for the operatic performance, opera workshops also take place for more intensive study.

| In April 1985, the SNU Cultural Center (Munhwakwan) opened providing a venue for various types of performances In 2000, the[If the following name is a proper noun, this part should be Art Center Concert Hall was constructed and the Department for Vocal Music had more opportune locations to perform. On April 8, 1995, a commemorative concert honoring the opening of the Cultural Center was held. Since the opening, a concert marking the beginning and ending of semesters as well as a concert which is held at the end of lecture series. An annual aria concert and art song concert is performed which includes songs written in English, French and German. |
